Volunteer stories – Carolynne

Interested in volunteering for your credit union? We spoke to Carolynne Icke about her experiences of volunteering for the Credit Union in Milton Keynes.

How did you first get involved with the Credit Union?

With the exception of Peter Hughes, who is Chairman of the Credit Committee on which I also serve, I am the longest standing volunteer with Milton Keynes Credit Union, which is now Swan Credit Union. Peter and I were both on the Steering Committee before the Credit Union (CU) was formed. I’ve been involved with the CU for the best part of ten years.

What is your background?

I am a trained Debt Advisor for Money Matters, run through a local church, and of course debt advice goes hand in hand very often with borrowing, where people have made unfortunate financial decisions and landed themselves in long-term debt. If members need or want debt advice, our team can usually help them or point them in the direction of another FREE debt advice service.

What do you do in your role as a volunteer?

My role now is to help the rest of the Credit Committee to come to a decision about loans which fall outside the normal criteria and therefore have to be referred to us by Credit Union Solutions. Occasionally, if the Credit Committee can’t decide whether to grant a loan or not, the loan application has to go to the Board of the CU.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Volunteering for the CU goes very much hand in hand with my volunteering for the debt advice team. I like the ethos of the CU (as much as I hate the ethos, if they have one, of doorstep lenders and loan sharks!), as we are helping people on low incomes with poor or no credit rating to save and borrow ethically and I hope that, in doing so, we will also remove the need for them to come to us at debt advice in future.
