About us


Swan Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. We exist for the benefit of present and future members who live and/or work in Milton Keynes, North Buckinghamshire or South Oxfordshire.

Our mission is to provide caring, community banking, offering safe savings and ethical loans.

Swan is founded on values of openness, trust, fairness and mutuality. These inform everything we aspire to do, and are more fully explained in our Business Plan

As a Credit Union, we are different to high street banks and other commercial lenders: we are run and owned by all our members. Every member is a shareholder in the cooperative and has the opportunity to vote in decisions on how we are run at an Annual General Meeting. As shareholders, our members will receive a dividend whenever a surplus allows.

Operating as an online savings and loans organisation, we now offer 24/7 access for members to their accounts, with office-hours telephone support via our helpline, and face-to-face service from our Information Points. Members can also use the facilities of the Paypoint card system.

Through our four Community Banks we aim to develop a valuable partnership with local communities, and out of conversations with them we intend to extend the range of financial services that we can offer.

The credit union, like banks and building societies, is authorised and regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority PRA and the Financial Conduct Authority FCA. Savers’ deposits are protected by the same Financial Services Compensation Scheme that covers banks and building societies.


In September 2015 we had around 1,100 members and were looking after members’ savings of £555,000.

We began operations in 2006, serving the population of Milton Keynes under the name of Milton Keynes Credit Union. In October 2013 we welcomed Aylesbury Credit Union joining us and changed our name to Swan Credit Union to reflect the new geographical area served. We operate four community banks: MK Community Bank (Milton Keynes), Aylesbury Vale Community Bank, Thame Community Bank & Didcot Community Bank (both in South Oxfordshire).

In 2013/14 the two separate CUs helped our members by issuing more than 190 new loans to a value of over £190,000. If we had not been there to help, most of our members would have had to go to expensive high interest lenders. In our second year as Swan (2014/15) we issued 308 new loans to a total value of £301,000.


We are affiliated to the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL), registered under the Data Protection Act and a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and the Financial Ombudsman Service. We are able to provide a high quality service to our members through our partnership with Credit Union Solutions who are a non-profit cooperative. Credit Union Solutions administers our accounts and member services on our behalf.
